First Food for Greyson

3:51 PM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

We've gone round and round about how we were going to start Greyson on solids. There are so many options and so many recommendations to take into account. He is just about 5 1/2 months and the general recommendations state to start somewhere between 4 & 6 months.

After doing my own research, we decided to just completely skip rice cereal and baby oatmeal, the most common 2 things people start their baby on as solids. They don't really have anything necessary for baby and most babies don't even like them.

I had my sights set on baby-led weaning - just jumping straight into real foods, squishy of course, that Greyson can pick up & eat on his own.

Well at Greyson's first birthday party for his friend Bradaigh, we decided to see what he would do with a piece of watermelon, out of pure curiosity!

I just held a small piece of watermelon by his mouth. He started licking it & was a little confused at first then before I even realized it, he sucked it out of my grasp! It freaked me out a bit! I know watermelon is mostly water, but still. It startled him and he made a face that was very unsure of what happened, but eventually just licked him lips & looked to see if there was more.

It made me very nervous giving him food that he could potentially choke on. So we decided to try the pureed route first & see how he does & try solid solid food after he gets the hang of the purees. So tonight we gave Greyson his first solid food - Sweet Potatoes! :)

"Ready to roll mom! Let's do this!"

We didn't start with a whole lot since I didn't think he'd eat much & didn't want to waste it

Helping dad get the spoon in his mouth! He was having such a good time trying the sweet potatoes!

Daddy wanted to see what he'd do with the plate...

"Oops! Dropped it dad! You gonna get that?"

Our clean-up crew to the rescue!

Messy baby after his first food experience!

Greyson really seemed to enjoy the sweet potatoes! He got so excited & would grab the spoon to shove it in his mouth! We are going to follow the suggestion to try one food at a time for a few days just to make sure that he doesn't have a bad reaction to them. But given that there aren't any food allergies present, it is unlikely that he will have a reaction to it, but we'd rather be safe than sorry!

My baby boy is growing up so quickly! Crazy to think that in just a couple of weeks he will be 6 months old already! Where does the time go?! I've already started gathering ideas for all the upcoming holiday fun for Greyson - his first Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas & Birthday! Lots of great stuff planned so stay tuned!

My Breastfeeding Journey - Part 2

1:31 PM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

"What do you mean he didn't gain any weight?!" Ughhh. That's not what you want to realize as a first time, breastfeeding mom. Greyson's source of food is me & he isn't getting enough - doesn't make you feel so good.

So I went to see my lactation consultant & she brought in a doctor who was a tongue tie "expert" - I use that term loosely as she is hardly such, but apparently the only one here who kinda knows what to look for. She confirmed that Greyson had a mild tongue tie and proceeded to explain the options. They could leave it be and he would likely continue to have the problems he'd had forever, including speech issues later on. Or she could clip it and it *could* improve things. There was more but way too much to explain. After talking to my husband, we decided to go for it. The possible benefits outweighed the risks in our opinion and were worth it to us.

I love post-nursing snuggles!

Only I was at the appointment with my son as it started as just a check-in to see what might be wrong. I am NOT the person to be around when anything painful happens to my son. I wept like a baby for both sets of his shots, so imagine sitting back while the IBCLC swaddles him & holds him down and the doctor cuts his frenulum [skin connecting his tongue to the bottom of his mouth]. I was about to hyperventilate. No anesthesia, just 2 snips and he was done.

They handed him to me and said "nurse him, it will help it stop bleeding." I was watched like a hawk as they tried to determine if it'd helped. Well at this point, we'd been at the Pediatrics office for a few hours and Greyson hadn't had a nap. So he was exhausted, I was distressed after putting him through all of that and he was in no mood to nurse, regardless of how hungry he might have been. After a long nap, he had a good feed and things seemed to be improved.

He does the silliest things while nursing - if I have a necklace on, he HAS to play with it!

We continued to nurse as we did before, every 2 hours or so, except at night since he was sleeping decent stretches at this point. Things did seem better - I could hear him swallowing more, he was having more diapers, and he was still meeting his milestones. He was gaining weight, but not very much, even with the tongue tie correction. He only gained about 1 pound from 3.5-4.5 months, which isn't great...

So the IBCLC - she's basically my BFF haha - suggested I get serious about giving him some bottles. I had been trying, but I would do them here & there, not really worrying about getting him a certain amount. But clearly we needed to do something. So I started pumping in addition to nursing. Not sure what you know about that, but its time consuming like no other. I save a little time by pumping while I nurse, but still..

I set a goal for myself of 4-6oz a day until that Thursday night when the IBCLC called me at almost 9 PM and said she was looking at his growth chart and it was such a slight incline that she wanted to make sure everything was okay. So that goal I mentioned quickly changed to 8-10 oz a day. And sure enough when I had him weighed that Tuesday, he had gained 9 oz from the week before! So regardless of the tongue tie clip, he is an inefficient nurser still.

Chronic teething means EVERYTHING makes its way into his mouth & gets chomped on! Ouch!

So now, 2 weeks into pumping and nursing, I am exhausted. It is more time consuming, obviously. Luckily, Greyson does great with going back and forth between nursing and bottles, though most of the time I'm sure he prefers the bottles. He gets super excited when he sees one! I have to keep it hidden until I am ready to give it to him.

He can now hold his bottles on his own, though I don't usually let him, as he holds it high to guzzle it down

Sitting in his high chair - excited to start solids soon!

As of now, I am very proud of myself for continuing through all that we've been through during our nursing relationship so far. The pain, tears, and time - but I can honestly say, its so worth it to me to be able to proudly say my son has only had breastmilk during his life. My goal is at least 1 year. We are planning to start solids when he is around 6 months, so stay tuned to see how things go with that introduction!

My Breastfeeding Journey - Part 1

5:09 PM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

Breastfeeding. One of the many things a new mother and family must decide whether to venture into on the brink of bringing their little one into this crazy world. How will I feed my child? What is right for my child and my family? Well after much research and talking to many different people, this is the choice we made for our family.

I didn't know much at all about breastfeeding, in all honesty, until I got pregnant and somehow, I knew it was something I wanted to do. I'd never known anyone who breastfed until I got to Germany and met so many young women, around my age, who had at least attempted for some time who I asked endless questions. I don't at all want it to seem like I look down on formula or mothers who feed their children formula! Both my sister and I as well as my husband, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews all had formula and are great! But after all I'd learned, I couldn't not try to breastfeed!

Skin to skin loving in the hospital with my little guy

I knew having a baby was going to change and consume our lives, especially after deciding to breastfeed. I'd heard and read how often newborns eat, but you don't really realize it until its you doing the feeding.

I knew the importance of skin to skin, especially right after birth. I delivered at a military hospital and happily, it was their policy to place the baby with mom immediately after birth, assuming there are no complications. After such hard work, I was in shock and awe with this little baby they placed on my chest. I wanted to smile and cry all at once, especially after I saw the look on my husband's face as we admired our new son. But within minutes things changed - I was losing too much blood as my body was failing to hemorrhage. To make it easier on the doctor to "fix me up," a nurse took Greyson to clean him up and weigh him. After an hour of pain and all kinds of discomforts, I finally got to hold my son and stare at him like I'd imagined doing. I followed the advice I read and had the help of great nurses as I tried to latch him - fail. He was so tired and just wouldn't. They told me it wasn't a big deal as many babies aren't hungry right after they are born.

So after we got settled into the Mother Baby Unit, we tried again. And again. He just wasn't having it. I had several nurses try to help me, showing me different techniques to latch him or hand express so he could have the colostrum. I started to get nervous - was this just not going to happen? Finally, around 8 PM that night [Greyson was born around 10 AM] my nurse suggested I use a nipple shield and see if it helped, which it did! Greyson latched right on and was finally nursing. I was relieved and anxious! Something I'd set my mind to doing was finally on its way.

We were discharged on a Saturday and had to return the next day for a check-up with Pediatrics. Greyson lost 11% of his body weight. Ugh. They don't want them to lose more than 10% within those few days, so now I was discouraged, especially when the doctor uttered the words I dreaded - "Come back tomorrow and if he hasn't gained, we'll let you know how to supplement with formula." I got tons of encouragement and information and found out that I didn't have to go with the doctor! His weight loss was normal and if I had to supplement, I could use my own milk. Luckily, by the next morning, he's gained several ounces more than they wanted to see him gain so we were good to go.

Midnight cuddles with my happy boy

Around the clock feedings. Every 2 hours, even through the night. His adorable self made it a little easier to willingly get up at 3 AM when I'd looove to be sleeping to feed him. We had this idea and after talking to a few different people, went with it - a pacifier! He just wanted to suck on something all the time so figured this would be a great thing for him. He liked it, his latch didn't.

Greyson & I after his first bath & getting the pacifier for the first time

I didn't realize it at the time, but things were about to change and challenge me in more ways I could have ever imagined. His latch was messed up and the pain was unbearable. I would cry feeding him. Cry when I was done feeding him. And cry watching him do anything knowing I was going to eventually have to feed him. It took 3 days. 3 days for me to break and almost give up. Greyson was 19 days or so old at this point.

I researched and researched and had myself determined it was all sorts of problems. Thrush. Mastitis. Everything that could be wrong, I thought it was. I found a Lactation Counselor who was able to meet with me that day to try to help. She checked his latch and low and behold, he'd stopped flanging his upper lip out. She also told me I was on the right path to mastitis when I saw her. I had a red patch on my breast that was warm, but it went away by that evening so I didn't worry about it. His messed up latch had made him very inefficient. Fixing that little thing helped so much more than I could imagine at the time. But the damage was so extensive it would last for months. I had a giant gauge in my right nipple and my left nipple was basically gone! Ouch!

Milk coma!

Despite the damage and the lingering pain, I pressed on. I was told it would heal quickly with the latch fixed, but that wasn't entirely true. I finally spoke to the IBCLC here and showed her my situation and she almost cried for me. She could tell just by looking what kind of pain I was in and could not believe I was still breastfeeding at this point - and honestly, neither could I! She gave me a 3 cream compound to mix and put on every time I nursed. More things I had to carry around and worry about. But they were helping so I didn't mind. 3 months. That's how long it took for them to heal to the point where I could bear to have anything touch them. The day I could shower and not have to cover my boobs with one hand was an amazing day!

Then I got a plugged duct! Seriously?! Things were just about healed and then this happened - which also happened to be during a week when my husband was away and everything was seemingly going wrong, including not having hot water for a few days. And what you want most when you have a plugged duct is hot water. Fail. After constant nursing, massaging, hot/cold compress and finally hot showers, it was gone.

I thought everything was fine and dandy as we continued on our way. Then reality check - Greyson had stopped gaining weight for a whole month!! Our breastfeeding journey was about to take a stressful turn...

Our journey continues here

5 Months!

11:57 AM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

Whoa! Greyson is 5 months old now! Man has time flown by & life changed in such a short time!

Weight: 12 lb 5.5 oz

Greyson is FINALLY able to fit in 6 month clothes without swimming in them! He's had some troubles but we have things under control. We have such an amazing support system & couldn't do it without each & every person involved who has given us advice or just been there to listen.

Greyson is growing so quickly & doing & seeing so many new things. He is so interested in EVERYTHING! I love just sitting back and watching him explore things - the way he studies so intently anything he encounters.

Checking out the grass, which he loved of course

Jump, jump! He loves this thing! He will walk in it until he can't go further, pick up hit feet & let himself swing back! He could play in this forever & just chats up a storm!

Exploring his toy! So many pieces on it & he has to inspect each part

Recently realized how fun doing lizard tongue is! He makes bubble, silly noises & sticks his tongue so far out!

He started on the mat & made his way to the middle of the floor, when I took the picture. He rolls & kinda scoots, though its more of a wiggle!

He also decided he loves sleeping on his belly! He almost always rolls onto his belly either right after we lay him down or in his sleep

Rolly Polly! We have to watch him so much closer now since he will roll on anything!

Bedtime stories with daddy. Started doing this as part of our bedtime routine. He usually spends the whole story trying to eat the book, but he likes mommy or daddy reading to him

He had his first experience in water, other than his bathtub. We went to a lake here in Germany, Bostalsee, and he seemed to enjoy it once it warmed up a bit!

He LOVES to look at himself. Mirrors, iPads, pictures.. you name it, he loves it! Its adorable!

I am so blessed to be able to stay home with him and give him all of these difference experiences & help him grow & develop. He is such an amazing baby! Sometimes I cannot believe how we got so lucky with him. Being a mom is the best thing I've done in my life. Watching his personality shine is just the greatest!  As usual, I'm now off to play & snuggle with my handsome lil guy!

Happy 4th of July!

3:01 PM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

Happy Independence Day everyone!

We celebrated for the 2nd year from here in Germany. Greg was a little sick in the morning & early afternoon so Greyson & I kicked off the day on our own. We went to the Rockin 4th Fest on Ramstein AFB. We grabbed some coffee with my friend & hung out with other ladies & babies in the unit while they were running a dunk tank & face painting booth.

Once Greg was feeling better, we picked him up & headed back up to the festival. We got some food - but only after standing in a ridiculous line for about 30 minutes just for brats! Greyson got to play & see some people we don't see that often. He loves being told how cute he is - he's slightly vain for a 4 1/2 month old! haha

We hung out for the fireworks the festival was setting off that night. Considering the military's cutbacks, the fireworks display was pretty good. I was nervous about Greyson's first time watching them, but he did GREAT! He was mesmerized by the colors in the sky & the loud noises didn't bother him at all. Greg & I took turns holding him & about halfway through the display, he passed out in Greg's arms. It was adorable - then distressing when he got woken up at the car! Sorry Grey!

Me & Greyson ready for fireworks

Greyson sleeping through the flashes & booms

Greg, Greyson & I watching fireworks

While it is hard to celebrate the independence of our country while thousands of miles away from family & many friends, it turned out to be a good day! Hope everyone was safe & enjoying their 5th of July!

Japanese Garden

11:15 AM Amanda Greathouse 0 Comments

We recently went to see the Japanese Garden in Kaiserslautern. Greg had been wanting to visit since he first saw the sign when we got here. It was actually really cool to take Greyson to see it since there's a bunch of different plants and such that he's never seen before.

Greyson loved seeing & touching the flowers

Waterfall & bridge

Baby ducks!

Greyson & Greg looking at leaves - he loved the different textures

Greyson, Greg & I in front of the waterfall

Greg at the Koi fish pond

It was a pretty day & nice to be out & about. There was so much to see & Grey cooperated, which makes outings like this so much better!
