First Food for Greyson

We've gone round and round about how we were going to start Greyson on solids. There are so many options and so many recommendations to take into account. He is just about 5 1/2 months and the general recommendations state to start somewhere between 4 & 6 months.

After doing my own research, we decided to just completely skip rice cereal and baby oatmeal, the most common 2 things people start their baby on as solids. They don't really have anything necessary for baby and most babies don't even like them.

I had my sights set on baby-led weaning - just jumping straight into real foods, squishy of course, that Greyson can pick up & eat on his own.

Well at Greyson's first birthday party for his friend Bradaigh, we decided to see what he would do with a piece of watermelon, out of pure curiosity!

I just held a small piece of watermelon by his mouth. He started licking it & was a little confused at first then before I even realized it, he sucked it out of my grasp! It freaked me out a bit! I know watermelon is mostly water, but still. It startled him and he made a face that was very unsure of what happened, but eventually just licked him lips & looked to see if there was more.

It made me very nervous giving him food that he could potentially choke on. So we decided to try the pureed route first & see how he does & try solid solid food after he gets the hang of the purees. So tonight we gave Greyson his first solid food - Sweet Potatoes! :)

"Ready to roll mom! Let's do this!"

We didn't start with a whole lot since I didn't think he'd eat much & didn't want to waste it

Helping dad get the spoon in his mouth! He was having such a good time trying the sweet potatoes!

Daddy wanted to see what he'd do with the plate...

"Oops! Dropped it dad! You gonna get that?"

Our clean-up crew to the rescue!

Messy baby after his first food experience!

Greyson really seemed to enjoy the sweet potatoes! He got so excited & would grab the spoon to shove it in his mouth! We are going to follow the suggestion to try one food at a time for a few days just to make sure that he doesn't have a bad reaction to them. But given that there aren't any food allergies present, it is unlikely that he will have a reaction to it, but we'd rather be safe than sorry!

My baby boy is growing up so quickly! Crazy to think that in just a couple of weeks he will be 6 months old already! Where does the time go?! I've already started gathering ideas for all the upcoming holiday fun for Greyson - his first Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas & Birthday! Lots of great stuff planned so stay tuned!
